SUNDAYS #8 vs. JAGUARS:

(vol. 26S, no. 8; newsletter by h.s.)
The Coastal Pirates completed a sweep of the Jags on the Sunday season, winning the last of their three meetings this week. Although the margin of victory was a healthy five goals, the Pirates found themselves trailing for a 10:00-minute section, and surrendered two goals — double the amount of the previous two meetings.

With a shortened eight-man bench (missing were Russ, Glenn Farkas, Dan DiPierro, and Nick), the Pirates recruited Joe Baio and Ed Southworth to flesh-out the blueline. About ten yards away, the Jags had an even shorter bench, with only one sub for the August evening.

It took almost half the 1st period for either team to break the scoreless tie; the Jaguars jumped-out to a 1-0 lead after capitalzing on a loose puck in our zone and rocketing a shot that glanced-off my stick and into the farside of the net. It wasn't until late in the period that the Pirates began finding the twine. Gucci tied things up 1-1 and then assisted on the next two tallies by Brooks and Scott Lematty. Those three goals all occurred in the final 4:00 minutes of the 1st period and opened-up the veritable “scoring floodgates” — giving the Pirates the 3-1 lead at the break.

Brooks (assist to Scooby) continued the scoring in the final frame at the 18:00-minute mark on yet another rocket. With a 4-1 lead, the Pirates cycling down low was beginning to pay dividends. A few plays later, after making a nice defensive play in our zone, Wildman bounced the puck off the boards and worked his way through three Jags before slipping one by the netminder. Late in the period — and about four “posts” later — Brooks completed the hattrick giving the Men In Black a healthy 6-1 lead. With about 3:00 minutes remaining, Ralz (assist to Scooby) added the final Pirate goal of the night on a wrister from the right faceoff circle. But just as the Jaguars had scored first, they also scored last: With only 2:30-minutes remaining, a Jag entered the zone and scored on a 1-on-4 (yes, one of him and four us). Still, after last week's loss, the win got us back on track for the last leg of the season and showed that the Pirates cannons are a force to be dealt with.
