WEDNESDAYS #8 vs. GERIATRICS:

(vol. 3W, no. 8; newsletter by h.s.)
This game was a strange one right from the start. Brian (playing against his old team) took a high-sticking penalty in the opening :30 seconds (a league record) to put the Gerrys on the powerplay. Fortunately, we not only killed off the penalty, but Russ did his Bobby Orr impression by going to coast-to-coast and scoring shorthanded. He added his second of the night later (giving him back-to-back 2 goal games), to put us up 2-0 at the end of the first.

Although we kept the pressure up and opportunities were abundant (thanks to superb passing by Chris, Roger and Russ and good second efforts by Wildman and BB), we couldn't "finish" on any of these golden chances. By the time the 2nd period finished, the Gerrys had closed the gap to 1-goal and had survived numerous near-misses and “posts” (Scott!).

The 3rd period was more of the same, but some solid goaltending by DePipp robbed Russ of a hat-trick and Roger of a face-off goal. With 1:30 left the Gerry's pulled their goalie and won consecutive face-offs in our end. On the second draw, we had trouble clearing the zone and they stole the puck and scored. A game that once looked so “in the bag” was now going to be determined by three shooters from each side. Roger, Brian and Russ represented the Pirates, but the first four shooters — two Gerrys and two Pirates — were stopped. Russ rifled our third attempt to give us the advantage, and the final Gerry shooter was stopped — somehow it caught the end of my pad (although i was looking behind myself for the passed puck).

WON 2-2 (s.o. 1-0)
