WEDNESDAYS #8 vs. WINGS:

(vol. 17W, no. 8; newsletter by c.g.)
The Coastal Pirates had an opportunity to even their record at .500 against the Wings. The GoodSports website had previously posted the Wings with a worse record than the Ducks, but somehow after our match they vaulted to second place (with our loss dropping us to third). Regardless, the Semifinals now seem established with the Tile Cutters facing the Ducks, and the Pirates taking on the Wings in a rematch. So how did we do against the Wings?

To start the game, the offensive lines were a little different: Jimmy Ferraro played wing with Goione and Sudol on one line; Wildman dropped back to center the Miller Bros. to form the second line. With Keith absent, the defense was the unique alignment of Kevin (making a Wednesday night appearance), Dave and Russ. The Wings are a good team that has added players as the season has progressed. Their goaltender played well in our contest and was a major reason for their win. Offensively the Pirates were buzzing, and had many quality opportunities, while our defense was able to keep the Wings at bay for most of the game. Harris was in fine form and turned away several good scoring chances the Wings could have converted on.

The Pirates got on the board first when Jimmy scored from a beautiful setup by Craig. The Wings would answer right back, however, scoring just :30 seconds later. The teams remained deadlocked until the Wings broke the tie midway through the 2nd. The Wings would add an emptynetter to close out the scoring, but overall it was a hard fought and well-played game — setting the table nicely for our first round game.
